Current phase: Contributor Apps — OPEN! (End January 31st)

About the project

"Colors Framed in Half-Light" is a fan zine born from seer love for the character Lukai Hwei by his community. All this dedication takes form through different artistic visions and means like art and writing, channeling inspiration into a full project with the goal to unify and highlight creative expression. Its goal is exploring color through the unique lense Hwei's character offers; from his champion abilities and their meaning in his backstory, to the notable particularity of his chamaleonic eye hue, this project strives to convey the importance of color as Hwei's core through striking art and stories created by his fans. For better access by the whole community, the zine will be of digital release and free download, with optional digital merch if contributors and the timeline favor their creation.

Guidelines

ׂ╰┈➤ As a generalThe zine will be in an A4 digital format, so the length for the featured fanfics, and the size and the orientation of the canvas for the art pieces will be subjected to the format used to produce the book. The zine has a focus on color and the meaning of every hue, so each creative piece must have a correct use of color according to the scene depicted in it.Submissions must be new and original pieces made specifically for this zine.Submissions must be your own creations. There is no space for AI and tracing of other creators' original works. The mod team will act accordingly if any submissions fail to comply to this guideline. You must be 18+ to apply.*ׂ╰┈➤ Artists
Each artist will be expected to produce:
One A4 sized illustration with background and rendering. The color palette used for each artwork will include and prioritize the designated color that will be assigned to each artist randomly after asking for preferences.Along with the color, the artist will need to depict Hwei accordingly, taking into account the meaning of the assigned hue.Merch artists will design a piece of agreed upon merch, which will follow the same guidelines regarding use of color as well.300 dpi minimum. For traditional art we require high quality scans and any subsequent edition to properly showcase the color.*ׂ╰┈➤ Writers
Each writer will be expected to produce:
One fanfic up to around 1.5-2k words each.Stories must explore the meaning of the assigned color and relate it back to Hwei, be it through direct mention and connection of the color to him externally or from a more personal and abstract way.Optionally, the writer and any of the artists that share color can collaborate in a similar concept.

Show us what you are capable of!If you are applying for a merch artist position, follow these exact same guidelines but with any merch products you've done and/or produced.Tip! Since this zine depends heavily in use of color, include works that showcase your most colorful pieces.*Writer applicants will be expected to share:3-4 samples of 1.5-2k words of what you consider to be your best writing.A link to your AO3 or any other site where you publish your writing. A lot of introspection and inner dialogue will likely happen in the fanfics written for the zine, include excerpts in your samples that stand up for your abilities with this kind of writing.

FAQ

Q: What is a zine?
A: A fan zine stands for fan made magazine, usually dedicated to a certain fandom, character, pairing etc. It is non-official and non-professional, produced entirely by fans for fans. They can discuss a wide variety of themes and still belong to a certain fandom, and their production can oscilate from digital only to fully physical if the circumstances allow it.
Q: Will this zine be for profit, charity or free availability?
A: "Colors Framed in Half-Light" is originally meant to be released digital-only and for free download.
Q: This is a Hwei-focused zine surrounding colors. Can other characters appear as well?
A: Only if they add to the whole scene and Hwei remains as the lead character. No shipping is allowed in the main zine, though.
Q: Is NSFW allowed?
A: The main zine is SFW only. We do not count artistic nudity as NSFW and can be portrayed in the main zine submissions with due content warnings.
Q: Is dead dove content allowed?
A: We would like to keep this zine SFW, so our most direct answer would be no. But we understand and acknowledge the darker parts concerning Hwei's character and how they can be brought up through some colors and their meanings, so discussions of darker topics depicted in any of the works for the project can be held during the creation process with each of the contributors interested!
Q: What do I do to participate in the zine?
A: Read our Guidelines thoroughly first! Many of your questions will be answered through them. We also encourage you to follow us on our socials to keep yourself posted on any news regarding application forms and selection progress. Any other questions can be sent through our official e-mail found on the homepage or through our StrawPage.
Q: What are the contributor selection requirements?
A: As long as the applications follow our Guidelines, the mod team will also take into account technical aspects like proper use of proportions, colors and composition for artists, and good sense of narration and use of English grammar and vocabulary for writers. Each application will be reviewed by all mods and subjected to vote!
Q: Is zine experience required?
A: Not at all! We look forward to welcome passionate and new contributors and mods into this project with no previous contact with the fan zine sphere.
Q: Will creators need to give up the rights to their work to the zine?
A: Absolutely not, each one of the pieces created for the project will only belong to its respective creator. However, we ask them to not share, publish or sell their submission until the zine is out. Let the mod team reveal the zine's contents at due time for promotional purposes and guarantee a certain public interest in downloading the final product.
Q: Can I also contribute as an artist or writer even if I applied for a mod spot as well?
A: Yes! You can be selected as a mod and still apply for a contributor spot through the designated forms. You will be reviewed and voted accordingly just like any other applicants under the same requirements, and the same guidelines in terms of timeline will apply to you as well. So be sure you'll be able to meet both ends without exerting yourself!
Q: May I apply for both an artist/merch artist and writer position?
A: Sure! None of the positions offered, be it as a mod or contributor, are discriminatory between them. As long as you stick to the requirements we ask for each one of the spots and submit your applications accordingly, you are good! Note that in case we receive a massive amount of applications for one or more of the positions, we will try to make space for the highest amount of contributors, hence a sole person with two roles will probably be less likely to happen.
